Cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia treatment attrition in patients with weekly nightmares

No study to date has examined how nightmares affect treatment retention and treatment course of cognitive behavioural therapy for insomnia (CBT-I). To fill this gap, this study examined whether nightmares predicted treatment dropout or treatment response to CBT-I. Our results indicate that nightmares predict treatment dropout. This finding has clinical relevance as it indicates that, when using CBT-I, one should screen for and consider nightmares in order to reduce treatment attrition and increase successful treatment completion.
